Asthma Education & Management
FACT: Close to 19 million adults and 8 million children in the US have asthma.Every 24 hours in the US:
- 44,000 people have an asthma attack
- 4,700 people visit the emergency room due to asthma
- 9 people die from asthma
In FY 2016-17 Breathe California:
- Trained 12 Promotores de Salud who then reached over 100 individuals with asthma education
- Conducted over 100 in-home asthma education sessions in English and/or Spanish as needed, reaching 150 individuals
- Provided information, referrals and/or phone consultations to individuals who were referred by their health care providers and followed up with written feedback
In California, as many as 1 in 5 children may be suffering from asthma. Asthma is the leading cause of chronic illness in children and the #1 source of school absences among chronic illness. In an effort to reduce the burden of asthma, we offer a variety of programs for children suffering from this chronic illness as well as for their families. These programs are designed to educate children and their families about their disease and teach children asthma self-management. Programs are offered in the form of school classes, support groups as well as a unique camp experience.
